All types of animal attacks can be physically and emotionally traumatic to the victim. The physical damage suffered can be incredibly serious, ranging from bruises and lacerations to loss of limbs or disfigurement. The damage to the victim, however, does not always end just because the physical wounds have healed. Many victims of animal attacks – particularly dog bites – continue to suffer emotional trauma for months or even years following the attack.

If you or a loved one sustained an injury from a dog bite, you may be able to hold the dog’s owner accountable for negligence. The Berman Law Group is here to help. Our Boca Raton dog bite attorneys have helped numerous Floridians successfully file injury claims after animal attacks.

Dog Bites & Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is the common aftermath of a dog bite in adults and children alike. PTSD is a mental health issue that can arise after a person has experienced a traumatic event. Assault by another person or even an animal can trigger PTSD and its associated mental anguish.

PTSD symptoms generally fall into one of three categories:

  • Re-living the event: Victims may experience flashbacks in dreams, which can contribute to sleeplessness or even avoiding sleep. This lack of sleep, in turn, can increase anxiety while a victim is awake.
  • Avoidance: Victims of trauma might avoid daily activities, people, or areas that remind him or her of the traumatic event.
  • Arousal: These symptoms can cause a person to have problems concentrating or sleeping, resulting in increased anxiety. People experiencing increased PTSD arousal can become overaggressive when reacting to everyday situations.

The Aftermath of a Dog Attack

Following a dog attack, people suffering from PTSD often experience severe anxiety associated with the trauma. They may be unable to be around animals of any kind. Even animal lovers are affected. Many were forced to give up their own companion animals because of PTSD following an attack.

The anxiety the victim experiences, however, is not restricted to fear or avoidance of animals. Research shows that animal attack victims often show symptoms of PTSD in every other aspect of their lives. PTSD victims sometimes avoid activities they once enjoyed, as well as with other people, for extended periods, greatly diminishing their quality of life.

Children Are Common Victims of Animal Attacks

Animal attacks are not restricted to any specific age group. However, children tend to be the most common victims. The Center for Disease Control ( CDC) and the American Veterinarian Association (AVA) both report that most dog bites occur to the face and neck of children, ages 5-7. Children are also more likely to develop PTSD following an animal attack. Not only is the attack horrifying to the child because of the physical pain, but also almost half of dog bites to children are inflicted by a family pet. In many instances, the pet is put down, which causes a child to experience the additional trauma of losing a best friend.

Children are also incredibly observant. They can, therefore, observe the change in a guardian or parent's face or mannerisms and feel the guilt or tension felt by that parent or guardian whenever someone mentions the attack. This observation can cause a child to stop talking about the event completely, choosing instead to keep his/her emotions hidden away.

If you or someone you know has been attacked by an dog or other animal, please keep this information in mind so that you can seek the appropriate medical care for any PTSD symptoms. We also encourage you to discuss your personal injury case with our Boca Raton dog bite attorneys so that we can help you build a strong case in pursuit of the financial compensation you deserve.
